First Bus Depot, Bristol

A comprehensive groundworks package for First Bus Depot, Lawrence Hill, Bristol

EvaBuild were appointed by Portakabin®. to deliver a comprehensive groundworks package for a new modular office facility at the First Bus depot in Lawrence Hill, Bristol. The project forms part of a wider redevelopment to support the electrification of the depot, including infrastructure upgrades for over 80 electric bus charging points.  

Our role focused on preparing the site and delivering all groundwork and external works required to facilitate the installation of the modular building, ensuring seamless integration with the live depot environment. 

Scope of Works 

Site Investigation & Design 

  • Delivered foundation design and detailed drainage design
  • Coordinated with modular building requirements to ensure accuracy of levels and interfaces 

Demolition & Site Preparation 

  • Reduced dig across the building footprint to accommodate new modular building at suitable FFL
  • Preparation of sub-base to accommodate new foundation systems 

Foundations & Substructure 

  • Installation of pad foundations across the footprint
  • Pier construction cast to suit modular building chassis thickness, adhering to installation tolerances 

Drainage & Services Infrastructure 

  • Installation of surface water drainage systems, connecting into existing site infrastructure
  • Installation of foul drainage systems tied into existing networks
  • Construction of a combined services trench to accommodate:
  • Water
  • Electrical
  • Data services 

External Works & Finishing 

  • Construction of new tarmac areas surrounding the building
  • Installation of road kerbs to define circulation and access routes as well as creating new disabled parking bays
  • Installation of cycle shelters
  • Fencing works to maintain site security
  • Soft landscaping works to enhance the site environment
  • Installation of a planter feature to the end of the building 

Challenges 

Working within a live depot environment 

The project was delivered within an operational bus depot, requiring careful planning, phasing and coordination to minimise disruption to ongoing services and depot activities.  

Integration with existing infrastructure 

Connecting new drainage and service systems into existing networks required precise coordination and verification to ensure compatibility and performance. 

Outcome 

EvaBuild successfully delivered a fully prepared and serviced site, enabling the efficient installation of the modular building. The completed works provide a robust infrastructure solution aligned with the depot’s wider electrification programme. 

The project supports First Bus’s transition towards a zero-emission fleet, contributing to improved sustainability and modernisation of public transport infrastructure in Bristol. 

Through close collaboration with Portakabin® and the wider project team, EvaBuild ensured a high-quality delivery while maintaining safe operations within a live depot environment.
